Harriet Beecher Stowe became an overnight sensation. When she visited England, she received an unprecedented ovation. To answer attacks on the accuracy of her novel, Harriet Beecher Stowe hastily compiled A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1853), which was “not quite truthfully” advertised as containing the sources from which she had worked. A second antislavery novel, Dred (1856), undertook to show the evil effects of slavery owners. Neither of these books created the excitement that accompanied the publication of her first propaganda novel.

Instead she revived her early interest in fiction dealing with everyday life in New England. One of the first great American woman novelist, Harriet Beecher was born and grew up in Litchfield, Connecticut, where her father was a staunch supporter of Calvinistic orthodoxy.

At 14 she underwent the experience of religious conversion to strict, conservative Christianity.
